Annotated Bibliography

The annotated bibliography that follows includes basic references that you may find useful in preparing for the exam. Each resource is keyed to the competencies and skills found in Section 3 of this guide.

This bibliography is representative of the most important and most comprehensive texts as reflected in the competencies and skills. The Florida Department of Education does not endorse these references as the only appropriate sources for review; many comparable texts currently used in teacher preparation programs also cover the competencies and skills that are tested on the exam.

  3. Bernstein, D. K., & Tiegerman-Farber, E. (2008). Language and communication disorders in children (6th ed.). Boston, MA: Allyn & Bacon.

    Provides an overview of language acquisition, emergent literacy development, language and communication disabilities, evidence-based assessment and intervention approaches, and the delivery of school-based services. Useful for review of competency 4.

  5. Hedge, M. N., & Pomaville, F. (2016). Assessment of communication disorders in children: Resources and protocols (3rd ed.). San Diego, CA: Plural Publishing.

    Discusses scientifically based assessment practices and processes for diagnosing a range of communication disorders in children, including resources and protocols that can be implemented during assessment sessions. Useful for review of competency 3.

  6. Papir-Bernstein, W. (2017). The practitioner's path in speech-language pathology: The art of school-based practice (1st ed.). San Diego, CA: Plural Publishing.

    Discusses the intersection of theory and evidence-based practices and the importance of personal wellness and growth to support the clinical success and professional satisfaction of speech-language pathologists. Chapters examine practices that speech-language pathologists can implement to develop their therapeutic, professional, and leadership attitudes. Useful for review of competency 3.

    Provides a comprehensive discussion of evidence-based assessment methods to accurately identify language disorders and intervention approaches to support language development, functional communication, and access to the curriculum. Chapters offer case studies and clinical vignettes, practice exercises with language transcripts, and study guides to promote understanding of assessment and intervention principles to guide the clinical practice of speech-language pathologists. Useful for review of competencies 1, 3, 4, and 5.

  9. Rouse, M. H. (2019). Neuroanatomy for speech language pathology and audiology (2nd ed.). Burlington, MA: Jones & Bartlett Learning.

    Provides an overview of the nervous system, neurological structures, and the neurological processes required for speech, language, hearing, cognition, emotion, and swallowing. Includes a comprehensive review of sensory, motor, and reflex signs that may indicate neurological damage or a neurological disease. Useful for review of competency 2.

  10. Shipley, K. G., & McAfee, J. G. (2020). Assessment in speech-language pathology: A resource manual (6th ed.). San Diego, CA: Plural Publishing.

    Source of authoritative information on assessment approaches and practices to effectively identify a wide variety of communication disorders in children and adults. Specifically addresses preparatory considerations and procedures and materials for obtaining, interpreting, and reporting assessment outcomes. Useful for review of competencies 2 and 3.

  11. Stone, C. S., Silliman, E. R., Ehren, B. J., & Wallach, G. P. (2016). Handbook of language and literacy: Development and disorders (2nd ed.). New York, NY: Guilford Press.

    Provides a comprehensive review of oral language development, including developmental characteristics that are typical and atypical, and the close relationship between language and literacy development. Examines cognitive, neurobiological, sociocultural, and instructional factors that influence language and literacy development and instructional strategies to promote children's word recognition, reading comprehension, writing, and spelling. Useful for review of competency 2.

  12. Zemlin, W. R. (1998). Speech and hearing science: Anatomy and physiology (4th ed.). New York, NY: Pearson.

    Source of authoritative information on the anatomy and physiology of respiration, phonation, articulation, and hearing, including the neurological structures and processes related to these functions. Chapters include illustrations and supplemental materials, such as a clinical notes and materials, to promote understanding of the speech and hearing mechanism. Useful for review of competency 2.
