Speech 6–12 (041)

The Speech 6–12 and Journalism 6–12 Subject Area Examinations are no longer being administered. The last administration date for these two exams was December 31, 2017.

The Speech 6–12 subject area examination consists of two subtests. Subtest 1 contains multiple-choice questions that assess your knowledge of the fundamentals of and role of context in effective communication, listening and research skills, message creation and delivery for public speaking, forensic events and techniques, and instructional techniques. For Subtest 2, you will prepare and present a three- to five-minute speech, which will be videotaped.

Registration Information

For a single test fee you may register to take either one or both subtests in one test session. You must pass both subtests to pass this examination.

Format Computer-based test (CBT); This test has two subtests. You may register to take one or both subtests at one test appointment.
Subtest 1 (Written): approximately 90 multiple-choice questions
Subtest 2 (Speaking): oral presentation (videotaped speech)
Testing Time Subtest 1 (Written): 1 hour and 30 minutes
Subtest 2 (Speaking): 50 minutes (45 minutes of preparation, 3–5 minute presentation)

Passing Score Subtest 1 (Written): A scaled score of at least 200
Subtest 2 (Speaking): A holistic score of at least 4
