Annotated Bibliography
The annotated bibliography that follows includes basic references that you may find useful in preparing for the exam. Each resource is linked to the competencies and skills found in Section 3 of this guide.
This bibliography is representative of the most important and most comprehensive texts as reflected in the competencies and skills. The Florida Department of Education does not endorse these references as the only appropriate sources for review; many comparable texts currently used in teacher preparation programs also cover the competencies and skills that are tested on the exam.

Topics include: early intervention, diversity, transition services for adolescents and young adults, and teacher preparedness. Useful for review of competency 1.

Useful for review of competencies 1, 4, and 6.

Focus on strategies developing and assessing social competence by addressing the unique strengths and needs related to social-emotional development in children who are Deaf/hard of hearing. Includes focus on assessment of social competence and social skills as well as strategies and activities that promote communication through social interaction. Useful for review of competencies 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Addresses postsecondary education, training, and career goals for individuals who are Deaf/hard of hearing. Primarily focused on the ecological systems theory (i.e., systems theory) and the resiliency model of development in addressing the postsecondary outcomes for individuals who are deaf. Topics include: employment, independent living, and community involvement. Useful for review of competency 5.

Addresses evidence-based practices in literacy instruction for students who are Deaf/hard of hearing. Describes role of assessment in progress monitoring and use of evidence-based practice across the key areas of literacy instruction outlined by the National Reading Panel: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Useful for review of competencies 3 and 7.

Introductory level e-book covers a broad range of topics specific to educating students who are deaf/hard of hearing. Chapters written by researchers, instructors, and practitioners in the field and were recently updated in 2019. References in each chapter provide hyperlinks to additional on-line resources specific to the topic. Useful for review of competencies 1, 2, 3, and 7.
